History (BA)


The Department of History seeks to provide a superior liberal arts education for undergraduates, including students enrolled in general education courses and History majors. Its courses seek to educate students in general historical knowledge; in reading, writing, and critical thinking; and in the methods of historical research.

Learning Outcomes

Historical Comprehension
Students will be able to analyze historical duration, succession, and change in terms of human agency and larger systems or structures.

Historical Analysis
Students will be able to use historical thinking to contextualize and analyze primary and secondary sources representing different points of view.

Historical Research
Students will be able to conduct original research by investigating and interpreting primary and secondary sources.

Historical Interpretation
Students will be able to use evidence-based reasoning to interpret the past coherently while developing and presenting an original argument, orally and in writing.
