Biology (BA)

The mission of the BA in Biology is to provide the student with a biology degree that offers broad training in the Biological sciences in the context a liberal arts education. Students are expected to become proficient in the Biology Student Learning objectives. Requirements for coursework in mathematics and related disciplines are less extensive than for students pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree. Opportunities exist for students to undertake an individual research project with a faculty member during their junior and/or senior year.

Proficiency in scientific inference
Students will demonstrate proficiency in scientific inference, to include analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating biological data, in the areas of organismal, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, evolutionary biology, and ecology.

Laboratory Skills
Students will demonstrate proficiency in laboratory skills by carrying out investigations using appropriate techniques and equipment in each primary area of biology (organismal, cellular and molecular biology, genetics, evolutionary biology, and ecology).

Students will demonstrate competence in writing and speaking to explain biological concepts and investigations clearly to scientific and general audiences.

Ethical and Societal Implications
Students will demonstrate an ability to identify and evaluate ethical and societal implications of scientific approaches used in biological research and of applications of scientific findings.
