Biology (BA)


The mission of the BA in Biology is to provide the student with a biology degree that offers broad training in the Biological sciences in the context a liberal arts education. Students are expected to become proficient in the Biology Student Learning objectives. Requirements for coursework in mathematics and related disciplines are less extensive than for students pursuing the Bachelor of Science degree. Opportunities exist for students to undertake an individual research project with a faculty member during their junior and/or senior year.

Proficiency in scientific Inquiry
Students will demonstrate proficiency in scientific inquiry, to include research design, hypothesis development, and analysis, interpretation and evaluation of biological data.

Research Skills
Students will demonstrate proficiency in research skills by carrying out investigations using appropriate techniques and equipment for biological research from the molecular to ecosystem levels.

Students will demonstrate competence in scientific communication, to include writing and speaking, to explain biological concepts and investigations clearly to scientific and general audiences.

Ethical and Societal Implications
Students will demonstrate an ability to evaluate ethical and societal implications of biological research and its applications.
