Counseling & Educational Development Advanced School Counseling (PMC)


The students and faculty of the Department of Counseling and Educational Development are a diverse community of learners collaboratively engaged in research, scholarship, leadership, advocacy, and service in the counseling profession. We prepare professional counselors to provide culturally competent counseling services that enhance the mental health and wellness of individuals, families, groups, and couples across the lifespan. In recognition of the changing needs of diverse client populations, students and faculty collaborate to advocate on behalf of clients, social systems, and our profession. In support of its national standing, the Department seeks to advance the field through its educational goals, scholarly/research efforts, and professional leadership. At the entry-level, we are committed to academic and clinical excellence through educating counselors to be leader-practitioners. At the doctoral level, we are committed to developing professionals who excel in teaching and supervision, who are advanced counseling practitioners, and who are skilled researchers, scholars, and leaders, ready to make significant contributions to the field.

Learning Outcomes

Counseling Skills
Students will develop increased skills in consultation, group dynamics and leadership, and behavior management related to their jobs as school counselors.

Students will increase their knowledge and comfort with current technology that can help them more effectively and efficiently do their jobs as school counselors.

Professional Identity
Students will develop a more integrated professional identity as professional counselors who specialize in school counseling.
