Special Education (PhD)

Mission

The mission of the Ph.D. in Special Education in the Department of Specialized Education Services at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro is to prepare transdisciplinary leaders for special education and related fields (e.g., deaf education) whose efforts enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities and their families. The program will accomplish this mission by addressing four themes:

  1. Generating knowledge to help shape the future of the field.
  2. Sharing knowledge with others so that they can understand it and use it to improve their practice.
  3. Facilitating strong professional relationships through collaboration.
  4. Creating, interpreting, and implementing special education policy and procedures.

In summary, this doctoral program prepares candidates for a variety of career paths of transdisciplinary leadership in the field of special education. It is based on the realities of contemporary special education and responsive to needs in the field.

Learning Outcomes

Research. Produce and share scholarly knowledge that contributes to the professional knowledge base in special education.
Students enrolled in the Ph.D. in special education in the Department of Specialized Education Services at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro will conceptualize, implement, and disseminate special education research, using qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, or single case methodology.

Personnel Development (i.e., College Teaching and/or Professional Development). Provide highly effective (i.e., evidence and standards-based) personnel development that is aimed at improving special education practice.
Doctoral students will be afforded opportunities, based upon their individual needs determined in collaboration with their chairs, to participate in college-level teaching experiences.

Service. Provide service (i.e., SPE knowledge, skill, ability) to benefit or support the profession, the university, or the community.
Students enrolled in the Ph.D. in special education in the Department of Specialized Education Services at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro will use their knowledge, skills, and abilities to engage in professional service that benefits or supports the SPE profession, the university, or the community.
